This roadside attraction is a diamond in the rough. There were so many signs along the highway for it so we figured to stop. We did the tour which was only $3.00/person which includes a video history of the windmill and we got to go inside. There are a few other attractions as well. The tour was pretty quick so we didn't spend too much time which makes it doable for people passing through the area. I also filled out the survey and got a free postcard.

Well we were driving by on the freeway and luck will have it decided to stop here. Beautiful and amazing gem of history tucked away, very friendly staff and an incredible story. We will be back in the future to spend more time for one of the festivities in this town.

Think there's nothing to see while driving on I80 West in Iowa? Think again. Harvey Sornson, an area farmer of Danish descent, came back from a trip to Denmark in the spring of 1975 and raised money in Elk Horn, Iowa (pop. 540) to buy a 1848 Danish Windmill and deconstruct it in Denmark and rebuild it piece by piece in Elk Horn Iowa !! ( And the town also built a Dutch museum with a wild flower path )

As an official Iowa welcome center, the entrance to the building has a fantastic assortment of brochures for destinations around the state! Before touring the windmill you can opt to watch a short video detailing the history of this gorgeous structure. Don't forget to take a walk through the grounds as well. There are a few neat areas worth seeing. Take your time going through the gift shop before leaving. It's worth walking through! Fantastic job to the Elk Horn community for this wonderful treasure!

Looks really neat! Unfortunately it was already closed when we got there, so we did not get to see the inside or do the tour. However the park area surrounding it was very nice and had some things to photograph and look at, including a tiny church, and a viking house, as well as information boards on viking culture.

This was only 13 miles round trip off the highway. Nice little town to stretch the legs. It's a small area to cover so a good pit stop. Interesting displays, reading, and the log house and windmill were a sight to see in person. The museum was closed for the day, so we didn't get to go inside. Look online as it appears the city has various events throughout summer.

The lady in the gift shop was lovely! Very kind and knowledgeable. The windmill and walking path around it were both amazing. It is so hard to wrap your head around the engineering it took to construct it in the 1850's and to transport it to the USA in the 1970's. The inside of the mill is absolutely beautiful. I would be careful about stopping if you have young or rowdy kids with you. There are ladders you can climb in the mill that they might find difficult. We hope to visit again! It was a lovely experience.
