I found this place on line and after reading the blurb, and I knew that I had to stay here. The problem is that Fortuna is one of the most isolated places in the area, but to me that is no barrier. So after a trip to Saskatchewan we booked a room on-line and aimed to come across the border in time to spend the night.
Alas, we didn't realize that the Fortuna border crossing closes at 5pm, and we were late. Having had no cell phone service we hadn't been able to call but at the border I called "The Teacher's Lounge" to say we would be late and they were so helpful and accommodating. So, after an hour and a half delay in getting there we turned up and were so pleasantly welcomed.
Alas I didn't get the bartender's name, but she was so nice, gave me a tour of the the place, and its history. We checked into our room which was small, but understandably so considering the buildings limitation, but we were only there to spend the night, so no big deal. The whole place was very clean and everything that someone might need was available. We even took advantage of the well equipped exercise room. The bed was very comfortable and shower was excellent. Not surprising given the area, the tv had 300+ channels for viewing, not that we watched anything.
There was no one around when we got up as we had been told there were no staff until 9am, but all the rooms and the entrance have a keypad lock, so we could come and go, with no need to turn a key in.
I cannot imagine that many people come through this area and even less need somewhere to stay, but if you do I highly recommend The Teacher's Lounge as a quirky and unique motel that deserve all the business that comes by. ~Graham
