In summer they rent kayaks and do a shuttle for a 7 mile run on the Cannon River from above the Cannon River Wilderness Area to Dundas (or Northfield). Website says the trip takes about 2 hours if the river is flowing fast but in Aug 2021, the river was super low and they said that it was taking folks 3-5 hours. You leave your car at the take-out and they shuttle you up. I only had 2 hours. I called and they left a kayak out for me at the Dundas take-out. In the morning, I paddled up river to the Cannon River Wilderness Area (I'd guess 2 miles) and then paddled back to the take-out. It was really pretty. It is all trees along this section of river. I saw lots of birds (eagles, kingfishers, herons, geese and more). I wish I'd had time to do the full 7-mi trip. If you do the trip when the river is low, make sure to take shoes for walking in the river. You'll need to get out and drag the boat sometimes. So like tennis shoes not flip flops. The owner was super nice and helpful on the phone and the whole process was easy.

Extremely courteous and helpful both on the phone and in person. We brought it own kayaks, and the cost for transportation was very reasonable. I believe our drivers name was Oliver. What a gentleman. Thank you for helping us to enjoy the outdoors and cool down in the heat.

My wife and I enjoyed our beautiful float down the Canon River this weekend. We were staying in nearby Faribault and this was a fun, relaxing and inexpensive outing that we highly recommend as a "must-do" for anyone in the area. Given the high water from a recent rain, we ran the course in half the estimated time. An easy kayak, requiring no unique skill set other than general comfort on floating the water, you can eat your packed lunch or snack while leisurely floating and taking in the wildlife sanctuary. We passed by sandhill cranes, hawks, and myriad songbirds of bright colors. Highly affordable, easy to arrange a time to meet at the river's edge, and on your own pace and time for getting from A to B, we can't recommend it highly enough! Want to go back and do it again certainly.

We rented kayaks today from them and it was such an easy process! Oliver helped us in the water and even picked some of us up at different spots because we missed the exit. Thanks for a fun day!

On a whim, decided I wanted to go canoeing yesterday. Called up The Gear Resource Outfitters and inquired about shuttle service. No problem, meet at the shop at 3:00. I was there at 3:00, helped load my canoe on their trailer and they had me on the water by 3:25. Fantastic, relaxing afternoon on the water, friendly professional service and a brewery right by the landing. Thanks for the great afternoon and look forward to the next trip, being new to the area, I appreciated the recommendations about other things to do here as well.

We wanted to do something outside in this beautiful weather and Gear ReSource Outfitters was an obvious choice! We rented a tandem kayak and the equipment pickup and directions were super easy to follow, the gear was great quality and the scenery on the river was beautiful. Definitely recommend!

The perfect friends and family, social distancing, contactless, activities are at Gear ReSource. We rented kayaks today and they made the entire process so easy. A thorough yet user-friendly website and they had our kayaks & lifejackets waiting for us at the departure site. They have year round activities and I will be using them again.

We just rented stand up paddle boards from the kiosk Gear ReSource runs on weekends down at the Fairibault Reservoir. Very fun, pretty cheap and competent, friendly service.

The stretch of river between Faribault and Northfield is truly outstanding for its scenic beauty, right up there with some of the nicest rivers I've been on out East. An added bonus it the remarkable amount of wildfowl on the river: great blue herons and eagles around every bend, along with cormorants and an occasional family of ducks. Up until now there hasn't been a rental place that would shuttle you on trips, so I am delighted that The Gear Resource has taken this on. The tandem kayak my wife and I used turned out to be an excellent choice and Robert was most helpful in getting us going and giving us tips before we launched. The stretch we did takes about five hours if you mostly just let the current take you; the stretch further on down to Cannon Falls is shorter but from what we have heard just as scenic. We'll be trying it next!.
