Disappointed by the fact that I let them know three times ahead of my reservation that we were celebrating a birthday, and even at some point discretely during the dinner, and they forgot to bring the candle, even though they had assured me on the phone that they would do so. When you travel 1.5 hours to the restaurant and save up to dine there, you would expect a little care for each customer. When we arrived at the restaurant, a woman greeted us coldly and did not even acknowledge our reservation. Aside from that element which dampened my time there, Madcap owns a great plate collection which enhances one’s dining experience significantly! Their dishes were beautifully presented, and most of them had their produces’ flavours enhanced rather than masked, which was a strong positive element. Our waiter was delightful. If not for the birthday mishap and the unfriendliness of the hostess, I surely would have recommended them more.

Madcap in San Anselmo is a gem. Near one of the cute commercial areas, parking can be weird to find if their small lot is full and you don't know where to look; the one-ways are a pain. Food was generally fantastic, just the right amount. Extremely seasonal, well executed, just a hint of inventiveness. Leans heavily on seafoods. Only miss for me was the ribeye course. Only issue we encountered was service. While overall service was efficient and competent, our main waiter clearly was very new at explaining dishes, very halting, mostly just trying to remember memorized lines. Definitely put a damper on the charm, pacing of the meal. Overall though, still very much a 5 star establishment. The service hiccup would certainly drop it from a Michelin 1* in my book, but perhaps it was a rare aberration, and everything else was top notch. Certainly a very solid deal at $125 - you get a lot more value relative to San Francisco or wine country equivalents.

This was a great dinner! I ate the best egg of my life. I loved every dish. We got the two extra options, the caviar and the abalone. The abalone was so good. Honestly, it was so good and definitely worth the drive. We caught it on our way back from Mendocino.

The food is a delicious fusion of French and Japanese. Each course is meticulously prepared and exploding with flavor. Does not disappoint. Reasonably priced and cozy atmosphere. Service is also 5 stars.

Very disappointed with the vegetarian option. Husband had the regular menu and really enjoyed it, mine was vegetarian. The flavors just didn't work, very little depth. The mushroom ravioli, all one of it, was delicious, and the bread and butter was delicious, but all the others were just okay. The very first course made me frown. Husband got a lobster shot, and I got broth. I have a hard time understanding how the chef thinks it's okay, for the final course, to substitute more zucchini and potatoes for the steak my husband got. I don't know, a breaded mushroom or something would have been nice. Something with a bit more meaty texture and flavor and depth maybe? Not happy, and spend a lot of money. Will not be returning.

Everything was delicious and the staff are super friendly and the wine list is also fantastic. Would love to go back next time, a good restaurant to stop by if you are on your way back to the city from Napa.

Amazing food that tastes as great as it looks. Chef Siegel is an artist. Also very reasonably priced for the quality food being served. Nothing negative to say. Every dish on tasting menu was superb. Easily deserves a second Michelin star.

Came for our anniversary and had such a spectacular meal and experience. The waitstaff was extremely kind and knowledgeable about the dishes and the quality of the food was incredibly high (especially considering the price, $110 for a nine course tasting menu!). We loved each course and were extremely full by the end, which I think is pretty rare for this style of restaurant – so definitely come with an empty stomach!

An exceptional meal in a quiet intimate space. Staff were ever-present but never intrusive. They answered all our questions and kept wine and water glasses well-attended. The tasting menu was a cornucopia of experiences, each one building onto the next either in its simplicity or in contrast of texture, aroma or flavors. It was without doubt a masterpiece of sensations, culminating with Chef Siegel's delivery of the penultimate plate of perfectly prepared ribeye. The second plate to last duck may have however been the climax in my book. The debate in the ride home proved how mesmerized we were at this tour du force of culinary creativity and presentation.

Came here for outdoor dining in COVID with my partner and boy was it a meal. With the 9 courses, I didn’t think they’d be that big, but they really make each dish build on each other. We also got the Sakura boy sake which was light and fizzy. The first course of the oyster shot actually stood out a ton since it was super savory and packed a huge punch for how small it was. One of the two bread courses came with an egg mixture which was just so fluffy and tasty! We even got bread refills which was just perfect. The other courses that stood out to me were the steak at the end and the dessert which had a really great texture and balance of the sorbet and the cake. We were definitely so full by the end! Overall, the service was good, the waiters were attentive and fun and it was a Michelin star meal. Some of the courses were a bit more bland but a fun experience overall.
