Hair of the Gods Logo

Hair of the Gods in concept, started over 20 years ago, even before it actually manifested itself in San Francisco. Geno Valle landed out west in 1989 from Cincinnati, Ohio and was determined to open his own salon to house his extensive collection of art, photography and love of plants. . . he was inspired by Hindu gods and goddesses and one day it came to him in looking at a picture of Shiva, “THE HAIR OF THE GODS IS SO ELABORATE” and that is how the name and salon was born here in San Francisco in 1997.

Geno's expertise in making you feel welcomed and cared for is par none. His many years of experience as owner and hair stylist shine in this remarkable nearly indescribable place. The esthetic is unlike any salon in San Francisco (the photos barely do it justice), spacious, warm, light-and-plant filled; the words 'serene', 'entrancing' and 'home-like', also don't quite capture it. It is clearly well-cared for, and so will you be. You'll be lucky if you can book with Geno - he's been cutting my hair for years, and I've known him since he was a 'baby hair apprentice' here in San Francisco "many years ago". There are also many other stylists available - Desiree's been there 8+ years. You'll be fortunate to book with her too. So lovely to experience having my hair washed, cut, styled by these kind and special people in their wonderful one-of-a-kind sanctuary.

Online reviews were no match to truly capture the delightful Hair of Gods salon. It's tucked away in Fell street and as soon as you enter the door you are transported into another world. I had an appointment with Geno who owns the salon and he is a delight!!! I went in for a haircut and it was the best 1 hour I ever spent. Geno is super friendly and took the time to consult with me and we arrived upon the haircut I would need to tame my wispy tresses. He explained the entire process as he cut my hair, how my hair would fall and what products I should use, to achieve just-out-of-salon look everyday. Geno has a very full appointment book so while it takes a while to get an appointment, it's totally worth the wait.

Geno was fantastic. He did such a good job with my hair. It’s the best curly haircut I’ve gotten in a decade.

Great first time experience with Andromeda. She took me as a last min client but took the time to listen to my wants.

Have been coming here for 6+ years first with Chelsea and the past several years with Geno. Always an incredible experience. Geno is an artist and the kindest soul. I'm always grateful to spend time in his chair. Plus if you're an art lover there are a million masks and all sorts of items to admire on the walls. All in all the most perfect, least salon-y space in the city.

Love my stylist, Geno! He works magic with my hair, and has been my stylist for about 20 years now! Can't recommend him highly enough!

Geno, the owner of the salon and my hair dresser, embodies all that I love about San Francisco. He is an amazing artist and is meticulous about my haircut. He takes into account the shape of my head, the grain of my hair, and crafts a haircut that will look good as it grows out. I enjoy my haircut so much that I have made a monthly appointment with him so it's on the books from now until forever.

I followed my hair dresser to this salon when she moved there a few years back. The salon itself is incredibly entertaining, an array of effigies from various cultures around the world decorating the place. Plants growing to the ceiling with natural light, old wooden cabinets and other assorted furniture placed here and there between each station. I believe they only have two sinks for hair washing but about 7 hair stations spread between two rooms, each hair dresser rents the spot and schedules their own appointments. I really enjoy going there because of the character of the place, it feels very welcoming. Now my hairdresser=The best --> Desiree Green. I have been with her over 5 years and found her through yelp reviews. If you are clear about what you want, let her know the basic information of how your hair is and if you bother to style it or just let it have its way she will work wonders. She keeps up with what's currently "in" and understands head shapes and what is flattering and not. I have very fine hair that is naturally straight, but a lot of it, and she has always worked it to it's best ability. She is also amazing because she gives her honest opinion; I wanted to chop off all my hair and get a pixie cut and after she felt my head shape and looked at how my hair grew she said the pixie cut would work but growing it out would be months of awkward hair length that wouldn't work with my head shape. I consider that to be A+ service from an expert. (I chopped it to just under my ears instead and it looked fantastic) Also if you have a flexible schedule she can usually fit you in within a couple days, otherwise plan for perhaps two weeks notice. I recently got my boyfriend going there, he has an incredibly thick full head of hair that grows quickly into a puffy mop. His hair stayed looking great over 4 weeks longer than his previous $10 quick cuts he was getting. He is now a regular too :) I have only good things to say about this place.

The interior of this place of fabulous. You feel that with all the green ferns and the Victorian architecture, as well as Buddhist statues, that you've entered a Valhalla for hair. You walk in feeling that rock stars from the 60s to the 90s will come out any minute. I've been getting my hair styled here for 2 and a half years. I love it!
