Welcome to the General Mercantile, home of the finest “gold” to be found on Last Chance Gulch! Since 1971 the Merc has been providing a unique counter culture to the community of Helena, Montana along with some of the best coffee around. The hissing of the vintage espresso machines and aroma of freshly ground espresso fill the cozy niches throughout the store, all of which are a perfect places to sip a warm latte, hot cocoa, or an old-fashioned soda while playing scrabble or other board games. The Merc also sells unique gifts, cards, novelties, candies, and more. Come pony up to the bar and enjoy a very fine cup of coffee with us. (Please note we do not provide wifi and have limited seating. Thank you!)

What a gem of a shop, from fun souvenirs to cute gifts they have something for everyone. Then what really exceeds expectations is the chocolate bars... bar where they have chocolates from all over the world pairing amazingly with the espresso drinks served up. All while being in a historic building in downtown Helena with small nooks to hide away and enjoy your treats. Would highly recommend visiting, "The Merc".

If your looking for funny or unusual gifts and candy that your parents might have liked this is the place for you. They used to have sandwiches a long time ago but now it's just some pastries and drinks . I didn't care for all the nasty stuff, it was too much of it. They have a nice selection of sauces etc..though .

Beautiful place to just relax and have a refreshing drink or food. Has a tree house inside the store. Definitely a place to check it out while in Helena.

Excellent coffee, fantastic assortment of chocolate bars to enjoy or take home as surprises, fun adhesive stickers, cards, kids' toys, and lots of variety with friendly staff! Great place to enjoy your coffee.. and bonus small lofted area for kids to climb while supervised.

Great place to get a coffee and shop for goodies and teas. More of a place to come and have a social experience or meet friends rather than have a quiet moment to yourself. Be aware they DO NOT allow laptop use in the shop. Not a complaint, I just would have liked to have known before I came. I respect that they are trying to preserve a certain culture but it is not something I am personally looking for. That is the reason for 4 stars.

Great place, great vibe and great people. This is a hidden gem in Helena. They’ve an amazing collection of creative candy and gifts. You can definitely feel the vibe as soon as you get inside. I highly recommend this place.

One of my absolute favorite places in Helena! I go there every time I'm downtown. They make the best coffee and tea! The staff is always friendly and welcoming. They have an awesome selection of gifts, candy tea, and novelty items. If you have kids under 12 they can climb up into the tree house in the top of the store and they have a little pond with 2 huge koi fish that even though they're fish, seem happy to have you there. They will swimmright up to the surface of the water and poke their heads out to say hi. I love all the little hole in the wall booths and tables so you can find a cozy place to sit and sip your drink and play a game of cards with a friend. Definitely one of the best parts of downtown!
