Had lunch at the Big Oak Cafe for the first time and found it to be a good place to eat with friendly staff and fair prices. Had the fried green tomatoes and chicken salad sandwich. The bread was excellent. I believe they make it in-house. Would recommend this place to others.

Service wasn’t great, food was overpriced and took over 30 minutes for some eggs! We had a large party but several tables arrived after us and received their food before us. Poached eggs were hard boiled; sausage gravy wasn’t good; refills for our drinks were nonexistent (we got up and walked to the drink station so they would get the hint); $50 for 3 people for breakfast is nuts! I would not recommend this place and probably wouldn’t have eaten the food if it was free. Don’t waste your time or money.

Walked in with a group of 9 at 10 on Saturday. Nobody said a word to us so we sat down. Server came over 5-10 mins later, not a smile and looked mad that we were there… food took forever and saw other tables get served much faster that came in after us… refills were at our request, we had to walk over and ask for them. Food was meh, poached eggs for the daily special of eggs Benedict were hard boiled, the sausage gravy had very little flavor and the food was a bit dry. The biscuits were very good, I wi say that. The prices were high. We tech to venture out often in groups and have never had this experience, went to the Mexican place a few miles away in town that night and were greeted with smiles and service was fast, food was great and spect less money. Won’t be going back, will save my money and go to Hardy’s. Do not recommend…

The absolute best restaurant in Urbanna and Middlesex county. When I stayed in Urbanna, I went to Big Oak Cafe three different times. The service is professional, and the food was terrific. Their seafood is fresh and delicious.

Excellent little place for dinner. Our meal was served fast and was very hot and it was real home cooked food, not packaged and full of preservatives. The staff was incredibly friendly. Not a ton of dining space so get there early. We loved it, we'll be back. Wheelchair accessibility: There was a ramp to the rear entrance however the parking lot is gravel.

A lovely spot, with great steaks at great prices. Wonderful service and killer cooking from the new chefs. We had such a nice dinner, and we'll be back next time we're in Urbanna!

This is a real "hometown" charmer! The atmosphere is family friendly and the employees are helpful. My wife had the chicken salad and declared it "amazing". I had the shrimp po boy and the shrimp was plentiful and delicious. We enjoyed the blueberry cobler for dessert and it was delicious but the portion was a little small. All in all a delicious meal and we'll definitely be back regularly. Thank you! Parking: Parking is spacious but the lot is gravel and the walk uphill from most spots. Wheelchair accessibility: There is a good ramp but the access to the ramp would be tricky because of the parking lot.

Very attractive and relaxing atmosphere, very welcoming. The food is very good and there is too much of it: of course this would not be a problem if one could stop eating! Open until 2 PM for lunch, reopens at 5 PM for dinner. Crabcake is large and very plausible; it is served with one side, a variety of which are available. There are a number of seafood items available, several shrimp preparations and several scallop preparations, all of which sound very appetizing. During my visit the dining area was comfortably full, mostly of senior citizens as I am. Beer and wine are available, but so is water, iced tea, lemonade and coffee. Desserts disappear rapidly, perhaps well before 2 PM—just a suggestion! I did not see the dinner menu, but the photographs of rare roast beef from other reviewers suggest that Big Oak Cafe may be one of the last great resorts for a massive old-style dinner. At lunch the speedy and efficient DeeDee H was my server, and I had my food—and two glasses of water—almost before I realized I had given her my order! As she was serving the entire room, I’m not sure how she does it! But I was certainly impressed! Parking is in the rear, and there is a certain up-hill-ness to gaining the dining room, but everyone finds the effort worthwhile. Perhaps our willingness to adventure is what keeps us all so young!—Or maybe it’s JUST GOOD FOOD!
