I was appalled. My mother went there for a broken hip and on August 21 st Dr, Hayashi, sedated her for her pain when she was having respiratory infection, and my mothers breath was so repressed that she suffocated in pure terror for over 5 hours. She was so terrified that she began begging the staff to kill her. It was the most horrific thing I’ve ever witnessed. This is completely unnecessary in this day and age. The following day my mother passed away, but I will never be able to forgive this Doctor and this hospital for allowing such an atrocity.

I went there with sever pain in my stomach. After registration a doctor quickly came by and made some tests including a CT. Everything seemed very professional. The nurse and assistant were super friendly. I really felt to be a person taken care of.

I'm giving a one star because I am unable to give no stars. First off, my mother was taken to ED by the EMS, and the nurses would not even allow me in her room, they denied me access to see my mother while she was in the ER by herself, with no phone, nothing. She could barley walk let alone comprehend what they were asking her because she was in so much pain. Dr. Edward Ruhland was the physician for my mother when she went to the ER, and he was the worse physician we could have got. He saw my mother once and just disappeared. My mother screaming in pain for him to stop touching her thigh where she was in pain from a fall and he grabs her thigh and squeeze's it harder. He made her feel like she was faking the pain and only in the ER for pain medication, Keep in mind my mother hates taking pain medication because of how it makes her feel. And the nurse that we had, Amanda, She was also no help, he also made her feel like she was a addict just looking for a fix. Let alone while my mother was trying to put back her clothes Amanda just goes ahead an opens the room door wide open while my mother had her shirt off, bra off, and not once but she did this twice. After telling us my mom can go home, she never even came back to help me put my mom in a wheelchair. I really don't know why Hilo medical center has turned into a place that no one wants to go but they really need to work on their hiring because this is unacceptable. This is the reason no one wants to go to the ER when told by their PCP because they get treated like nothing. For doctors and nurses who go to school 4-8+ years they really need to work on their compassion and their bedside manner. (not all nurses and doctors are bad but these two were just, so rude and unacceptable).

My father is in Hilo hospital right now. I was there about 5:45pm waiting for him to come back from a procedure that he needed immediately. My dad is 85 years old and he is hemorrhaging internally. When he came back to the room the 2 nurses totally ignored me. When I told them who I was, they looked at me like, “and”, I said “how is he doing “ and they said “great!!!” So I asked more questions, and they totally ignored me like they couldn’t hear me. They looked so irritated, like they hated their jobs. This is the evening shift. I heard of so many people who died there, because they don’t know what they are doing. So My dad asked for water, but he cannot have any so I asked if the nurse aid and give him mouth swabs. He comes back and gives them to me to swabbed him. How’s that!!!!!

Worst ER experience of my life. I'd rather go to urgent care or north hawaii. These transplants hid the nurse assistance button......needed help to go to the bathroom didn't bring me a bes pan till a few hours later.

From the ER to progressive care, absolutely the best team, staff, nurse and residents, HANDS DOWN!!! I can’t imagine a more caring, knowledgeable and proactive team to have been Ed care for by.

Went to the ED and it's upsetting that I am just another person being added to the list of others who have not had a pleasant experience here, and with the ED nurses in particular. To start off, I have had friends mention that the nurses here were not too considerate of the rest that patients need in order to get better and be discharged. I am pretty sure no one intends to just hang out and feel worse when they can just rest, feel better, and go home. After going to the ED with my other half and spending hours being talked to, treated, and figuring out what else could be wrong, my other half just wanted to rest. The nurses, on the other hand, seem to make that difficult because of their seemingly innate ability to talk amongst themselves and laugh aloud. I've heard some nurses making jokes to other employees when really they were just plain rude remarks, then they're making plans on going out or something but really... is there not the station they can do that instead of (what feels like) right by my room?! From a patient point of view, it just seemed both unprofessional and disrespectful. Despite wanting to say something so that my other half and the other patient in the room could rest properly, I felt that making a scene would be a worse idea... Especially since this same situation has happened time and time before without any change. This is my shot in the dark in hoping that more can be done to better train and educate these nurses for patients that simply want rest and go home.

I came to Hilo Medical Center ten days ago in an Ambulance at around 5:30 in the morning due to a very nasty Staff Infection in my right ankle. I'm still currently receiving care at their facility. I felt compelled to share my experience since I've been here. The experience has been the best I've ever had in a Medical treatment environment. The Staff and service is second to none. The Staff's care, consideration, kindness, and great attitude makes a patient feel very comfortable in what is normally not a pleasant experience. People like RNs Sabine, Chassie, Samantha "Sam" (Travel RN), Justin, Jasmine, Yvette, and Aides Chloe, Jerusha, Jess, Maraia, Myrna, and especially Robert "Bob" have gone above and beyond. I feel very blessed and thankful to be under their supervision. I highly recommend this facility to anyone in need. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. Sincerely, Jason

I worked here as a travel nurse in 2018. The patients and their family members were a joy. They were grateful stoic and pleasant. I truly felt the aloha spirit. I tried so hard to ignore the stereotype that people who live in Hawaii are racist. I really did, with everything in me. I refused to believe it because I didn't want to. But island mentality is very territorial and vicious and The local (chinese and Japanese) nurses proved it.) The manager Robin was very nasty and backed up Any Asian local nurse who bullied a white traveller. It really felt like 7th grade. Bullying was accepted. It was abusive, the things they said to you. It was like a weird dimension backwards in time. The nurse patient ratio was scary unsafe. 8 to 1! That's right. 8 to 1 on an acute care med surg floor. They had a weird old timey 1920s culture of women being the equivalent to children compared to men and it's just normal to them. This place gave me the creeps. I feel so sorry for the people who seem to feel "stuck" here In this nightmare with the fear of venturing to the real world. The racism is real, you guys. It's not made up just because you've never experienced it.

Wife went to Hilo Medical Center’s emergency room with extreme abdominal pain. The first Doctor she saw was a Dr Silverton ordered an MRI and pain meds then his shift ended. So after the MRI was finished, Dr. Calvert came in said, there are no gallstones and your stomach has a mind of it’s own and left. Several minutes later a nurse comes is with discharge papers no appointment with the hospital gastroenterologist as Dr Silverton had said would happen. My wife has something protruding from her abdomen and not one Doctor even examined her. So if you are sick, ill or injured find a different place. We will never go there again!
