Jori Robertson at the Mormon Trek location is the best fitness instructor you could ask for. She changes the workout exercises every week, and offers alternate exercises if you can't do the ones the class is doing. For general self workouts, I like the first avenue location the best. The layout of equipment is much better, kind of separating out the intense workout people from the lower intensity clients.

I'm in my 50's and I use to be hard core in my 20's and 30's. TSG is always clean and offers an outstanding selection in free weights, nautilus, cardio and other training modems. It doesn't have a night club feel to it and everyone seems to be congenial. I highly recommend it if your interested in getting serious and want a place you feel comfortable in

I have been a member of this location since October 2003 when it first opened as Core Fitness and has changed names/management a few times. The gym used to be the best gym in Iowa City, but has diminished since it changed to Top Shape Gym. There are 8 treadmills with tvs, only 3 of them work correctly, meaning the inclines work, all the buttons work. Only 2 of the tvs work with correct Mediacom programming. 3 of the treadmills are out of order and have been out of order for months. You can see where I am going with this. Most of the padding on every bench/piece of equipment is torn and needs to be replaced, not a hard fix. Some of the machine equipment is not space out safely. I have hit my shoulders/back numerous times trying to load plates onto the machines. Easy fix by removing a couple machines and spacing the rest out. The water in the water fountains is lukewarm at best. Easy fix by turning the thermostat down on them. See previous review from 2 years ago of same complaint, with response from owner. Nothing done! There is one employee, maybe two,that does all the cleaning and laundry extremely well. Most of the rest just sit there on their phones. Towels are backed up, restrooms are disgusting. In fact, if a health inspector saw the urinals in the mens restrooms, place would be shut down. I could go on and on, but I have reached out to the owner a couple times, got some poor excuse on how they are working on it and now they have not responded back to me or my wife. Therefore, I am addressing my complaints here. Hoping I have better luck.

Great gym with lots of variety and space. I don't use it to its fullest potential but I doubt anyone really does and thats what's great about it. Maybe as I grow in size and want to do more I might run into a wall but thats pushing high level strength and power training that I'm months if not a couple years from. 24 hours, decent price and yet to have a hard mask mandate. If they cut the hours and force a mask mandate I'm out. The Gym in ic did this and didn't even change their price as far as I know but I was out of there quick when they changed the hours and didn't reopen for awhile. Point is this gym is a solid beginner, intermediate and advanced use gym. Nothing really to complain about YET! Let's hope it keeps it that way. Also they offer classes and personal trainers which is part of the abundance this place has for the people looking for that sort of thing. Why i didn't give it 5 star is well I've been to 5 star gyms and this ain't it. Doesn't have the space or the budget I'm sure. As a 4 star gym it's about as good as it can get so well done.

Only complaint is that a lot of members will use multiple implements at the same time. Super frustrating when someone is using the only barbell bench and many other machines at the same time switching back and forth between all of them and not letting anyone else use them during peak hours. Use one at a time and then move on, it’s not that hard.

The gym is the best in Johnson County. It is spotless and well maintained as well. I highly recommend Top Shape Gym on 1st Avenue.

Iowa City Top Shape: Great instructors. Love the classes. The variety of classes cover many levels of the intensity of working out. You can find the class that supports your fitness goal. Started in 2017 with a trainer. All has helped me lose over 60 lbs and become more fit. However getting things repaired takes too long. Presently the middle toilet in the women's locker room has been out of order for over a month. This leads to bathroom backup after a large class gets out. The microphone for the spin/rpm instructors has not been reliable for several months. They are getting hoarse yelling directions to us.

Great gym! They had a really nice deal for students. They have squat racks, benches, and a dead lift platform. They also responded to emails quickly.

Wonderful full service facility with modern equipment my only complaint would be the water is warm in the drinking fountain which seems elementary to me but if you run a gymnasium you should definitely be able to provide a source of cold refreshing water. Also some other members and I were talking in the sauna and we all were informed when we signed up for our memberships selecting the most expensive option which included the ability to bring 1 guest for free while you were working out but now they have changed the policy and not updated the members to which it affects until we are at the front desk being asked for a 20

First got the membership because they were a 24/hr gym. They changed locations and changed the hours. It’s been more than 4 months since they said they were going to make it 24hrs again. Gym is too crowded. Makes it hard to move weights.
