My one and only experience with VCA West LA was beyond any expectations, in a very positive way. We found VCA because they were the only vet in the area who said they would provide care to our chicken (we have 3 egg laying backyard hens and one was very sick). Unfortunately our chicken was gravely ill and had to be euthanized, but the staff were incredibly empathetic and kind throughout the whole process. Yet that’s not the reason for taking the time to write this review. I’m writing this review with an emphatic 5 stars because we just received a SYMPATHY CARD in the mail from VCA, with 3 handwritten personalized notes from the staid/doctors and we are simply blown away at the gesture.

The employees are kind so I’ll give them 2 stars, but this place is definitively a predatory business who’s only priority is money. I’d recommend going with other options if you’re considering them. Our dog had been vomiting for 3 days and began screeching to touch (urgent care said to go to an ER if his condition worsened) so we called VCA and ACCESS. Access was $180 to see him and they estimated a 5 hour wait, while VCA was $300 to see him and they said it sounds severe and they would probably see him within the hour. It’s a large monetary discrepancy but we decided the matter could be serious and that the difference in hours could be significant for our dog’s health. So we went to VCA. The employees themselves are kind and I can’t say the care was bad (we aren’t allowed to be with them during treatment). I will say is that this ended up being a 5 hour ordeal anyway, so we may as well have gone to ACCESS, but I won’t hold that against them either. What I found truly appalling was our experience with the billing. Our dog had an x-ray done and a blood test. We expected to be gouged. $700, maybe $800 on the high end. Nope, $1600. $300 for being brought in, another $600-$700 for an X-ray. Aside from those prices just being absurd, not everyone has this kind of money on hand to drop in a single unexpected transaction. I asked if they could work with us at all; if we could get some time to pay, or have some of the exam fee taken off considering we were just in their urgent care. After some back and forth, the resolution from them was “which medications or blood work results do you want removed?” They would evidently rather take away treatment from a sick dog than even just sending us home with an invoice. Their priority is gouging people who are worried about their beloved pets; the actual care is secondary. You cannot claim otherwise, the evidence is definitive. I was truthfully shocked, but upon coming home and reading the reviews on this place, I guess I shouldn’t be. Anyway, after all of that, no concrete diagnosis. I will not be back here, I’ve learned my lesson.

Dr. Farber is a gem. All his employees are shining stars. I want to thank Justin who got us urgently to his office. This place really knows how to treat your pet well. They are kind and considerate, especially when your pet has a serious problem. They want the best for your animal. I just love this place. I'm sure my dog feels way better after the doctors visit!

I want to update my review to note that I appreciate that in this climate, Veterinary hospital staff can be overloaded. Mistakes happen. What impressed me was the way that they responded, especially from leadership. That has come in the form of Dr Mallard. He was so attentive to my concerns as he was thorough in his work. It truly impressed me. To Dr Mallard and Kayla’s credit, I will update with my dog’s post procedural guidance, as it is well deserved, they’re class acts. Thank you both for your top notch care of my dog.

In the past ten years, I had wonderful experiences at this hospital. When my 15 year old shepherd was critically ill, and being cared for in the hospital, the vet would text me, even if it was the middle of the night, an update on now Sadie was doing. They allowed me to visit, they were compassionate, and completely accommodating to the sensitivity of having a very ill dog who was dying. After that on emergency visits they had been good enough that I started using the hospital for primary care. And our main GP, Dr Silberstein has been fantastic. This is the only reason for any stars. However after an experience today and after ten years, we will be moving on. Looking for a second opinion for treatment for a staff infection for my dog, (our GP is on vacation) the ER department kept me waiting six hours only to tell me that they couldn’t treat my dog or offer any professional advice. In addition to that, Dr Hatton who was the ER doctor was unprepared, rude, and unprofessional. To the point where a client service person needed to step in and cut him off. I was charged for my visit, despite the fact that they did nothing for my dog. We will be moving on with our three dogs as I no longer have any faith in the expertise of the staff or their bedside manner. I would avoid it.

The only time I have been there was on my beloved companion's last day, but I am very thankful for the compassion that they showed me and her. Despite no preexisting relationship nor appointment, they admitted and saw us immediately when I carried my geriatric and distressed pup in on a Saturday morning. The vet (Tiffany, I think) was patient, caring, and clear. All of the staff were sensitive and kind. It was a truly horrible day, but I'm thankful that we were on good hands.

My beloved dog past away in my arms at home and since that was sudden I wasn’t prepared or had done any study on what you can do in those situations. I was told to call our vet, they were closed so i called VCA West LA as I have taken my dog there when he was much younger, so they still had our records. When I called they were super helpful & told me to bring him in and that they have a cremation service that would handle the rest. When I brought the body of my dog they were so sympathetic and kind and made the experience so easy . I am so appreciative of the care of the staff and will wholeheartedly recommend you to use this facility for your loved pets. Thank You for your care. 🙏

This location is awful. They don’t coordinate well with their office north of Sepulveda. Took my dog in for his radiation treatment and they left him without water for over 4 hours. He is 15 and frightened of going there. A simple phone call alerting me that they were running late that day would have prevented him from stressing out in a cage. There must be a more professional animal hospital out there. I feel it’s mostly $$$$$ to VCA that motivates them. I will say Dr. Downing at the other location is very patient and compassionate. Different experience entirely.

I’ve been taking my rats to VCA West LA for almost two years. They have great service and they really care about the animals. My rat Cash passed away last week. He needed to be put down, and Dr. Robertson handled it with kindness and gentleness and did everything she could to make it easier on us. Dr. Robertson sent us a card with personal notes from her and others at the office (Cindy and Rey, thank you!) to express condolences for our loss. It was so sweet and meant a lot to us. I really recommend it here.

Do not take your rabbit here. I took my healthy 1 year old Holland lop bunny here, and she died. Then they mishandled her ashes and went on to cremate her without my permission. Those are the facts. Waffle was scheduled for a spay and was killed by pre - anesthesia two hours after dropping her off before even getting into surgery. Dr. Robertson was the vet in charge of taking care of my bunny and Cindy Ziegler was the anesthesiologist. I want to believe that they are good people with big hearts that also felt the grief when she left this earth under their care. I want to believe that they and everyone else in charge of taking care of my precious waffle did the best they could to make sure she was safe, but I can’t. She was completely healthy and even did blood work a week before. I’ve had a bunny die before under the same procedure by an in experienced vet and I never thought I would feel this grief again. It’s absolutely crushing, heart breaking, and traumatic. unfortunately, to make things worse i was charged $500 for cpr and $2100 for a necropsy for answers (i’m still waiting for the results). In order for the necropsy to be done the last thing I heard from VCA was that she was being sent another place, which I now know was UC DAVIS. Then they accidentally communally cremated her despite knowing my wishes were to keep her ashes. This is unbelievably unacceptable. I trusted VCA with my beloved animal and unfortunately my worst nightmare became real, and they made it even worse. While I am still so beyond hurt, sad, angry, and emotional about this traumatic experience I want to encourage others to do your research, ask a lot questions, and get informed before you leave your pet at any vet, especially this one. Rest In Peace Waffle.
