What a beautiful and peaceful bookstore! I visited yesterday where there was a publisher’s event. I saw a great mix of new releases, classics, books that were on my radar, and books that immediately made my “Want to Read” list. There was some nice stationery and journals as well. Chain bookstores can be so overwhelming with choices so you usually just get what you came for and leave, but Brazos had employee reviews, and hosts monthly book clubs, making your purchase feel much more worthwhile. I ended up buying a book for my students, and a YA novel that will be discussed in their book club. It even came with a free nail polish! I can’t wait to visit Brazos again!

I believe supporting independent bookstores is incredibly important. But one of the joys of browsing a bookstore is being able to relax, and do so in comfort. BBS's continued insistence on requiring all customers to wear masks, and the continued closing of their restroom to customers have significantly diminished the appeal of this once charming store. I was a strong advocate of mask mandates before we had a whole regimen of vaccines to protect us, but the time for that is over - as is the time to close your restroom to customers. An elderly family member I was with a while back had to use the restroom after a long drive in from her house. She was refused, despite the fact that it was an emergency. The fact that we were long-time customers didn't matter either. (The nice folks at Hollywood Frame Gallery next door let her use their restroom.) I still go here to support a once great independent bookstore, but I never really feel good about it anymore, and it's just not much fun.

The bookstore is really organized and has a really relaxing vibe to it. The staff is really nice and friendly. One of the staff talks about the book that you've chosen and gives you details on it. It's like he's read every book in the store which is cool.

Lovely neighborhood bookstore with quite a variety of books. I came here for one book for my niece and left with 3. To my surprise, they even had books in french. The personnel are super friendly and we're of great help. And to top it off, they host book clubs (virtual at the moment).

As an avid reader and purchaser of books, I thought it might be lovely to check out local shops near me. Much to my surprise as most book shop employees are kind and helpful, this time was not. I picked a very special book for my sister called Monet’s Cat. I was so happy to have found something among the cluttered books and made my way up to purchase it. There was an older lady behind the counter but she was not at any specific register and she was sitting down farther from the registers. She asked me if I was ready and I said yes and she got up to check me out, I walked up to one register and she said “no, here” assuming I would know what register she meant just by her voice because she did not point and was not close to a specific register. This is fine, I’m not as much upset with this as I am about what happened next. I hand her my book and she asks if I want a bag. (Preface, I have never been to this store so I do not know what kind of bags are usually used here) I ask what kind of bag and she glared at me and said with a very aggressive attitude, “a bag, a paper bag.” And scoffed. I said yes and did not speak another word to her. This really upset me, to one, get an aggressive attitude with a customer who was smiling and did not cause any scene or cause for dismay, and to glare at me like I am an idiot not knowing what the word bag means. One should not have to assume that all bags are paper. If the bag was plastic I would not have wanted a bag, as a chance to use less plastic. After I handed her my debit card she asked me how I was and I ignored her. I do hope that she has a better day today and that no other customers have a similarly rude book-shopping experience. I almost want to go and return this book and get my money back, but I hesitate because this is a very special book for someone I care a great deal about and I do not know if I could find it in a store again. I will not be going back.

I'm proud that this bookstore is in my town! The staff genuinely love to read, and the culture of the store is comfortable and enthusiastic. The space is small, but the variety of genres is impressive. The bookstore also partners with Inprint (Houston's literary arts nonprofit) for events that bring great writers to Houston. If I'm having a hard day, I know I can swing by Brazos Bookstore for a pick-me-up!

Wow! This bookstore is great! They have a great selection of books. There's also themed areas including Halloween, black authors, and indigenous voices. The children's area is also great and has books for all ages. There are author signing events too. The staff is super friendly and helped us quickly. Make sure to bring a card because they're not taking cash at this moment. The parking lot is also spacious!
